A few years ago in their Annual Edition featuring “The Best of the Mountains” Pinnacle Living magazine selected Lookout Mountain, Georgia as one of the five areas in the Southern mountains with the best climate. Lookout Mountain enjoys all four annual seasons; however, none are severe.

While summer can be hot in the valleys, it is usually cooler on Lookout Mountain by 5 to 10 degrees. This is one of the principal reasons families in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s built “summer homes” on the mountain to escape the summer heat and humidity.

Spring and autumn are special times to be on Lookout Mountain. During the spring it is exciting to see the green of new growth spread from the valley floor up the side of the mountain and the white blossoms of the Dogwoods Trees sprinkled through the forest. A little later in the season the mountain comes alive with the blossoms of the Mountain Laurel. As summer gives way to autumn and cooler temperatures, the colors of autumn begin to spread down the mountain to the valley floor. The reds, yellows and oranges of fall bring a spectacular collage of colors on the mountain and with the first frost, a desire for a roaring fire in the fireplace.

Unlike mountains that have higher elevations in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the winter temperatures are not so cold that your outdoor activities are not curtailed on most days. There is usually snow on top of the mountain when there is none in the valley; however, rarely is there enough snow to cover the roads and when we do, it only lasts a day or so. The last good snow on the mountain was in 2001.

Having the true four season climate has lead to the phenomena known as the “J Factor” or “Half backers”. These are the people from the northern states who had moved to Florida and found it too hot and missed the different seasons, so they moved back to the southern mountains for the cooler weather and the changing seasons.
